CheckMate Winery Receives International Architecture Award from Chicago Athenaeum

2023/08/15

On August 10, CheckMate Winery (led by design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA) was announced as one of the winners of the 2023 International Architecture Awards, presented by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. Now in its 20th year, The International Architectural Awards are the oldest and most prestigious distinguished global building awards program that honors new and cutting-edge design worldwide.

The newest winery in the von Mandl Family Estates portfolio, CheckMate Winery revitalizes an existing winemaking facility, refining the processing areas and adding new tasting rooms with layered views of surrounding vineyards and the Okanagan Valley beyond. Envisioned as a signature object set into the hillside, CheckMate Winery balances bold architectural gestures with deference to the surrounding environment. The new building expands the existing footprint of the cinderblock production facility, wrapping public and private volumes in a graphic black and white perforated metal skin that appears opaque from a distance. New and existing production areas along the building’s north side step down from street-level, integrating the sequence of winemaking with the topography of the site.

“It’s a special honor to be recognized by the International Architecture Awards, especially for a project like CheckMate Winery that represents a long relationship with a truly fantastic client,” Kundig shares. “I’m incredibly grateful to the von Mandl Family Estates team and all of the partners and collaborators we had the opportunity to work with on this project.”
