Olson Kundig Announces Amansanu in Texas
Introducing Amansanu, a ranch-inspired Aman retreat less than 90 minutes northwest of Austin in the Texas Hill Country, led by design principals Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, and Kevin Kudo-King, FAIA, LEED AP.
Nestled among cliffs, canyons, and limestone escarpments shaped by water over millions of years, the resort unfolds as a gradual journey through the landscape. As a distinct location in the Aman portfolio, Amansanu is organized to engage the site’s natural features, aligning buildings with swimming holes, rock formations, and open sky. The architecture steps with the terrain to frame long views across the Texas horizon while simultaneously carving out retreats with a refined residential intimacy. This contrast between expansive views and quieter, inward moments becomes central to the experience.
Drawing from regional ranch vernacular, the design emphasizes a restrained material palette: stone bases ground each structure, while wood volumes and metal roofs sit lightly above. Interiors extend this approach through a more refined expression of smooth stone, crafted wood, and leather, creating a tactile counterpoint to the rugged surroundings.
“Amansanu’s story begins with the scale of Texas, the horizon, the distance, and the sense of something much larger than you. Our goal is to create a soft landing that feels peaceful and grounded, while keeping guests connected to the immensity of the landscape. That contrast is where the idea of luxury begins to take shape.” – Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal
“There is a magic to be discovered in spending intimate moments in this rugged and vast landscape, contemplating near and far while sheltered by a quiet architecture.” – Kevin Kudo-King, FAIA, LEED AP, Design Principal
