Three Olson Kundig Projects Receive AIA Northwest & Pacific Region Design Awards

2021/10/22

On October 14, three Olson Kundig projects were honored with 2021 AIA Northwest & Pacific Region design awards. Woodway Residence (led by principal/owner Kevin Kudo-King, AIA, LEED AP) received a Merit Award, while Hale Lana and Costa Rica Treehouse (led by principal/owner Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA) each received Citation Awards. This annual awards program recognizes architectural design excellence in projects from firms located in the Northwest and Pacific Region.

Home to an active family, Woodway Residence inhabits a series of planes that float above a restored meadow. Blurred boundaries throughout the home’s glass pavilions allow activity to flow easily between inside and out, fostering and celebrating connections to the surrounding environment. The home’s quiet architectural character respectfully defers to this natural context and allows Woodway Residence to sit lightly on this special site.

Hale Lana is a family retreat on Hawaii’s Big Island that takes the form of several canopy-like pavilions linked by elevated wooden lanais and a series of gardens. The ultimate design goal was to balance transparency and enclosure to create a home that would function for the couple, their extended family, and for large gatherings, all while maximizing connection to the Hawaiian climate and landscape.

Costa Rica Treehouse is inspired by the jungle of its densely forested site. Built entirely of locally harvested teak wood, the retreat engages with the landscape at each of its three levels. Designed to operate passively, the top and bottom floors are completely open to the elements with an operable wood shutter system.

As a firm deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest, we are honored to have our work recognized by this program, and thankful to the valued clients and project partners we had the opportunity to work with on each project.
