Olson Kundig is a collaborative global design practice whose work expands the context of built and natural landscapes.
Founded as a largely residential practice, Olson Kundig continues to design single‑family homes in a variety of scales and locations, ranging from rural landscapes to dense urban conditions. Each draws from this context to create functional, comfortable spaces that reflect a deep consideration of the human experience.
A holistic approach to interior and architectural design responds to the unique vision and needs of each client, while expanding opportunities for collaboration with craftspeople, artisans, and fabricators. This “macro to micro” approach to design carries big ideas down to the smallest details, giving coherence to the full user experience.
Installations, exhibitions, and museums frame both communal and individual experiences that invite visitors to consider their surroundings in new ways, juxtaposing ideas from different contexts. This collective ability to learn, engage, and discover fosters new understandings and expands perspectives beyond what is familiar.
Spanning offices, art galleries, restaurants and more, these projects encompass the private businesses and organizations that support and enliven communities. This work reflects a variety of architectural expressions and scales, informed by the needs of the populations they serve, the natural and cultural context of their surroundings, and the vision of each client.
Places of worship provide peaceful spaces for personal reflection, in addition to community gathering at a variety of scales. Considerations of light, color, and proportion combine to create a sense of the sacred, framing an environment that fosters deep connections between individuals and nurtures both personal and collective spiritual relationships.
Responding to the needs of the surrounding community, these projects expand both housing and commercial offerings to contribute to a dynamic, vibrant urban environment. From adapting existing buildings for new uses to introducing new buildings that bridge gaps in the urban fabric, this work adds new layers to the evolution of cities.
These projects build on the firm’s residential foundations, responding to the natural and cultural context of their surrounding environments. The design response seeks to craft an experience that is deeply authentic and transformational for visitors, while reflecting the unique identity of global brands such as One&Only, Six Senses, and Aman, among others.
These shared spaces for learning, living, and gathering, draw on principles of workplace and residential design to reflect the culture of the surrounding campus while responding to functional needs. A thoughtful consideration of intersecting programs and populations captures opportunities for interaction and engagement across campus communities.
Competitive and self‑initiated design exploration supplements and informs our built work, providing an avenue to engage with new challenges and go places previously unexplored. These investigations can extend outside of the realm of architecture to films, fiction, and other graphic forms.
The contemporary office acts as a civic space, where teams gather and collaborate, nurturing a shared community. Informed by the functional requirements of the organization, as well as its culture and values, these projects highlight special tools, areas of collaboration or the process of production to make these shared stories visible to all users.
Our planning and landscape architecture approach fosters a cohesive experience, from an overall vision that preserves and enhances the natural systems to an artful integration of nature and the built environment. This work connects people to their surroundings, considering the user experience, sustainability, wellness, and adventure at a range of scales.
The TK Collection is a hardware and home furnishings line that grew out of Tom Kundig’s longstanding interest in crafting intimate, human-scaled experiences within architecture. Like his well-known kinetic building elements, the TK Collection celebrates moments where people touch and physically engage with the buildings they inhabit. Each piece in the collection is crafted and finished by hand, reminding us of the simple beauty found in the architectural elements we touch every day.
