Olson Kundig Wins Two AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Design Awards

2019/09/27

On September 19, two Olson Kundig projects – the Wagner Education Center at the Center for Wooden Boats (led by principal/owner Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA) and 100 Stewart Hotel and Apartments (led by principals/owners Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, and Kirsten Ring Murray, FAIA) – were honored with AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Merit Awards. This annual awards program recognizes architectural design excellence in projects from firms located in the Northwest and Pacific Region.

The new Wagner Education Center at the Center for Wooden Boats was carefully sited to fit within the existing park at Lake Union, while also presenting a more visible face to the city beyond. The building itself performs like a boat – users tune and transform it as they might trim sails, working with natural forces to optimize performance under changing conditions. In design and operation, the building is a direct response to CWB’s mission: a hands-on community gathering space for people of all ages to grow, learn and connect with the environment.

Located in downtown Seattle, 100 Stewart Hotel & Apartments is a mixed-use development with hospitality, residential, retail and publicly accessible courtyard space. The development enhances the pedestrian-oriented richness of the neighboring historic Pike Place Market District with an interior courtyard that connects to existing pedestrian pathways to offer a sheltered space of respite. The eleven-story hotel, which faces the intersection, both commands and honors the site, transforming from a semitransparent crystal box by day to an illuminated sanctuary by night.

We are delighted to share the honor of these awards with our valued partners and clients.
