Kirsten R. Murray and Alan Maskin were the feature editors of ARCADE 31.1 Art Moves, Cities Follow. The issue, which hit newsstands December 7, 2012, considers the patterns created by artists who identify affordable abandoned or neglected districts and establish communities—only to be faced with aspects of displacement and gentrification. It has become ubiquitous in our understanding of urban growth and it is rarely questioned. In this issue, we ask artists, developers, educators, curators, graphic designers, writers, architects, urban planners and cultural producers to examine this migratory pattern from their varies vantage points.

ARCADE is a Seattle-based nonprofit that creates opportunities—in print, online, in the community—for sharing ideas about design, culture and the built environment. They publish a quarterly magazine; host events and provide a curated calendar of Northwest design and art happenings.
