Located in the revitalized Fulton Market neighborhood, Olson Kundig’s Chicago Office occupies a historic 1889 brick-and-timber building. Once a casket manufacturing facility and later a lighting production space, the building’s materiality preserves its industrial heritage while engaging in a dialogue with the surrounding contemporary architecture.

The interior layout draws inspiration from Olson Kundig’s New York and Seattle offices by removing existing private offices to expose the structural elements and transform the space into an open environment with dedicated spaces for collaboration. Windows on either side of the office capture views of the Chicago skyline as well as natural light from the east and west; workstations are deliberately layered to form a cohesive workspace and ensure every seat has a view. Custom plywood millwork weaves throughout the office, echoing the materiality of the firm’s other locations while complementing the rich, patinaed hardwood floors.

Original conference rooms received subtle acoustic upgrades, while an industrial-sized art wall and custom bookcase were seamlessly inserted into the historic brickwork. Shelving is integrated throughout the workstations, accommodating models, books, plants, and personal items, and adding warmth to the office. Furniture selections, including brown leather and chrome office chairs, a custom model table, and parson-style tables with custom TK Collection steel tube wheels, balance contemporary function with the building’s vintage quality. A rooftop terrace provides additional space for casual meetings and gatherings during the warmer months.
For decades Olson Kundig has been deeply committed to excellence in design, enabled by profound relationships forged with our clients. We have always worked globally, and across building types. Expanding to Chicago, a vibrant city with a historic culture of design and urbanism, is an obvious choice for Olson Kundig. We’re excited to weave the spirit of the Pacific Northwest into that rich history.Kirsten Ring Murray, FAIA
