Set in historic downtown Whitefish, Montana, Larch House provides communal and individual amenities for guests to customize their adventure throughout every season. Designed to be both a gateway to and a refuge from the rugged alpine landscape, Larch House bridges mountain adventure, the dining and nightlife of the town center, and the comforts of Whitefish’s residential areas.
Larch House
Whitefish, Montana

The unique approach of this boutique hotel expands Whitefish’s hospitality options by dispersing accommodations across three distinct programs. These volumes enclose a central courtyard, offering social gathering spaces around patios and fire pits for après ski or relaxation between adventures. Individual cabins feature intimate fireplaces and sweeping vistas of Big Mountain and Whitefish Mountain. Designed to cater to families and larger groups, the Long House accommodations embrace views of the town’s urban landscape. The Larch Building provides additional private rooms as well as a range of amenity spaces, including a basement speakeasy and bars at the lobby and rooftop, as well as a gracious living room off the lobby, a spa and a roof terrace with hot tub.

Larch House’s design serves as a bridge between past, present, and future. As a modern tribute to the area’s historic log cabins and railway industry, its interiors and exteriors use a straight-forward materiality of cedar, brick, and steel. Wrapping the bar, the “veil” blends tradition and innovation in a brick façade with alternating courses removed and supported by steel lintels, fostering transparency and exchanging views between the interior and surrounding community.
Larch House seeks to create a small hotel that feels like visiting someone’s home but with more amenities. One of those amenities is the central courtyard—it’s a space that embraces the spirit of mountain adventure but retains that sense of refuge. Guests naturally gather here and can take in the landscape while swapping their adventure stories.Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA
