Let’s Talk Science: Alan Maskin and the Seattle Space Needle
Horizon HouseIn this presentation to Horizon House, Alan Maskin and Blair Payson, AIA, principals/owners of Olson Kundig, discuss the science and engineering feats required by The Century Project, the renovation of Seattle’s iconic Space Needle. Olson Kundig’s design builds on the same conceptual premise that originally informed the Space Needle—a place devoted to observation—including the world’s first rotating glass floor, new glass barriers with integral glass benches on the observation deck, a new steel and glass stairway and glass-floored oculus connecting all three floors, and revised interiors. The Century Project at the Space Needle received an American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Architecture Award in 2022, and the Seattle 2030 District Vision Awards Leadership Award in 2019.
