Fourth Ward Office Project and Cyrus Restaurant Receive American Architecture Awards

We are honored to share that two Olson Kundig projects have received 2024 American Architecture Awards: Fourth Ward Office Project (led by design principals Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Kirsten Ring Murray, FAIA, and Steven Rainville, AIA, LEED AP) and Cyrus Restaurant (led by design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA). Founded in 1994 and presented by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, and Metropolitan Arts Press, the American Architecture Awards recognize excellence in architecture and urbanism across the United States.

Fourth Ward Office Project is a 1.1 million-square-foot commercial high-rise building fronting the Atlanta BeltLine with offices and street-level retail. Organized around a central thoroughfare that doubles as public civic plaza space, the building creates new urban connections between Old Fourth Ward Park and the rapidly revitalizing Atlanta BeltLine corridor. Certified LEED Gold, the building includes sustainable design features that reduce energy consumption, address stormwater runoff, and encourage alternate forms of transportation. Utilizing extensive daylight and thermal modeling, the building façade enhances building performance while maintaining daylight and thermal comfort for occupants.

Cyrus is the new home of chef Douglas Keane’s acclaimed restaurant, which makes deliberate connections between the agrarian landscape of the Alexander Valley and the progressive dining experience that unfolds within. The building is raised slightly above the ground level, providing an experience of floating above the surrounding vineyards. Through Cyrus Restaurant, the architecture is deliberately subdued, creating signature moments that quietly complement the dining experience. This allows guests to follow a soft circulation pathway, drifting through interior spaces linked by a warm materiality and character of light and shadow, while the kitchen program remains rigorous and regimented.

“It’s a special honor to be recognized by the American Architecture Awards—especially for projects like Fourth Ward and Cyrus that represent the vision of two fantastic clients who are constantly pushing for evolution and next-level creative thinking,” Kundig shares. “We’re deeply grateful for what we achieved, and incredibly proud to share these awards with our clients and talented partners we had the opportunity to collaborate with on these projects.”
