Located on the historic campus for the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science (CASBS) at Stanford University, the new administration building’s design is intentionally simple to continue the historic mid-century modern vernacular of the campus.

Characterized by a flat roof, stained cedar siding, and steel framing, the administration building complements the understated 1950s architecture of the existing campus. This critical node for researchers offers a variety of meeting spaces while blending into the surrounding landscape of mature trees, an existing brick courtyard, and low stone walls.

Positioned to frame the final open edge of CASBS’s campus, it reinforces the historic courtyard as an outdoor gathering space for lectures and study.
The new building is sited directly south of the historic Main Building, designed by William Wurster. Its modest massing and proportions allow the building to quietly complete the Thomas Church-designed landscape, revitalized by SWA Group, while sitting lower than the surrounding buildings to preserve the Main Building’s strong horizontal lines as the architectural focal point.
