I define success by how I participated and if I took something away from the experience. If I don't take anything away, then to me, that's a failure.

Hemanshu Parwani (HP)

Principal / Owner, CEO

Hemanshu Parwani—known as “HP” to friends and colleagues—is principal/owner and CEO of Olson Kundig, aligning the firm’s strategic business and organizational development with our design-first approach. Since joining in 2018, HP has expanded internal capabilities, driving Olson Kundig towards larger-scale projects that illustrate the firm’s global design leadership while preserving our residential roots and distinctive “scrappy” culture.

HP began his career with Pannell Kerr Foster Worldwide and now has over 30 years of experience in international operations, capital markets, and strategic development. Leveraging his expertise to broaden the firm’s portfolio, he continually positions Olson Kundig in the competitive hospitality market, cultivating relationships with design-forward brands, including Aman, One&Only, Six Senses, Montage, Auberge, Fairmont, Rosewood, Armani, and Four Seasons. Under HP’s leadership, the firm has experienced significant growth in the hospitality sector, with active projects in development on six continents.

HP’s framework for Olson Kundig’s strategic planning encompasses three main focus areas: organizational capacity, business development, and operational excellence. First, HP works to fortify the firm’s collective capacity for complex work. He maintains a strong future focus by leading initiatives to attract top-tier global talent and planning for succession. HP has led the firm through positioning and expansion beyond Seattle to new offices in New York and Chicago.

HP also supports business development by driving developer-led projects, such as multi-family and institutional works, and is a staunch advocate of affordable sustainability. He is a regularly featured speaker on topics of hospitality and sustainability at conferences worldwide, including Global Hospitality Talks, Hospitality Leadership Design Conference, HD Summit and FIND Design Fair, and serves on award juries, such as AHEAD Global and Americas.

Operational efficiency is HP’s third major area of focus. Optimizing internal infrastructure has allowed Olson Kundig to pursue and efficiently deliver projects of unprecedented complexity and scale, from designing for constructability to investing in technology to improve project delivery. By optimizing its processes, Olson Kundig drives innovation and successfully delivers projects spanning various market sectors and typologies, all while upholding its hallmark standards of design excellence.

A true global citizen who has lived in Asia, the Middle East, and North America, HP embodies an adventurous spirit both in his personal pursuits and his leadership. As an avid mountaineer, he has climbed some of the world’s tallest peaks, including Mt. Everest, often raising funds for causes close to his heart such as the American Cancer Society and Autism Speaks. HP’s mountaineering experiences reflect his broader philosophy in business and operations: “To me, reaching the summit is merely a byproduct of a larger goal, which is to build trust and personal bonds in our daily work with each other.”

We humans, as we experience space, we're reminded of something like a memory, or you're trying to build a memory from that space to carry with you. The memories you experience in a space, whether old or something new you've created, we humans congregate around other humans, emotions, and experiences. Hemanshu Parwani

Cost considerations compromise sustainability when a project does not align with a place’s capacity to sustain and support it. You have to develop elegant solutions that respond to each project’s unique site conditions and opportunities. Hemanshu Parwani
