Tom Kundig: Complete Houses

Monacelli | 2025/10

Residential work is where my architecture practice began and continues to evolve. Each home is a chance to test an idea, refine a detail, or take a risk. This book is a moment of reflection in my practice, an attempt to capture something that is always in motion.

Complete Houses presents a comprehensive look at Tom Kundig’s approach to one of architecture’s most fundamental typologies: the home. For Kundig, residential design offers a unique opportunity to explore the essential elements of architecture—space, light, material, and view. When well-choreographed, these elements become the physical expression of an emotional experience of place. The projects in the book are case studies in innovation, offering opportunities for research and development that inform the larger projects across his body of work.

Bound in vibrant cloth with an embossed architectural sketch, and housed in a slipcase featuring project photography, the book is a tactile reflection of the physicality of his architectural work. It presents a detailed chronology of 462 residential projects—past, present, and future—while inviting readers to explore 38 homes in-depth, 12 of which have never been published before. Projects are accompanied by original interviews between Kundig and editor Dung Ngo that explore his Swiss heritage and architectural training at the University of Washington, stylistic preferences, and collaborative approach, as well as hand-drawn sketches and striking photography. From an arid desert valley in Mexico to the forested archipelagos off the Washington coast and the volcanic shores of Hawaii, the homes in this book span a wide range of geographies across nearly every continent.

Highlighting the nuances and innovations at the heart of each project, Complete Houses reveals Kundig’s ongoing inquiry into the concept of “home” as it continues to shape his practice. The monograph will be followed by a companion volume in 2027, Tom Kundig: Complete Works, which builds on his foundations in residential design and traces their influence across his non-residential projects. Together, these books celebrate the defining moments in a long and continuously evolving architectural journey.
